Though the handling of the tag team division ahead of Elimination Chamber has left a little something to be desired, despite the lack of imagination behind the tag team turmoil bout, there has been one positive along the way.

In that 12-man tag match on this past week’s SmackDown, the Ascension scored the winning pinfall. That was their first in almost an entire year since defeating the illustrious team of Damien Sandow and Fandango on the Feb 11, 2016 showing of Superstars.

As well as being a surprise in and of itself, that win gives the Ascension some much-needed momentum—something that was badly needed in a division with its fair share of jobber tandems. Sure, it’s only one win, but it’s enough to plant the idea in our minds that the Ascension could be contenders to American Alpha’s titles at the PPV.

Add the Usos into the mix, as well as the fact that Heath Slater and Rhyno are former champions themselves, and suddenly the Ascension’s win makes Sunday’s title match all the more intriguing. The stipulation may still be unimaginative, but at least the outcome's now a little less predictable.
