Cesaro was unfortunate not to win the WWE Intercontinental Title at Payback. As both Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn brawled close to the ring, Cesaro became distracted, enabling The Miz to roll him up for the victory.

At Extreme Rules, he was once again pinned by Miz, but not before the picture of him defeating the champion was clearly presented. Locking in the Sharpshooter to his opponent, Cesaro then felt Miz tap out. Releasing the hold, he raised his arms high, as though he had finally won the Intercontinental Title.

Sadly for he, Maryse had distracted the referee, stopping the official from seeing The Miz frantically tapping. This was an excellent moment in the match, because the insinuation was that Cesaro would have won had Maryse not been there to help her man.

Not only did this make Maryse look clever, it also made Cesaro look good too. He can rightly state on television that he should be WWE Intercontinental Champion, keeping him in the mix for the gold.
