WWE Gimmicks That FAILED The HARDEST Every Year (1985-2025)

39. ‘Adorable’ Adrian Adonis (1987)

Being fair, 'Adorable' here is only in this slot because 1987 was almost totally devoid of rotten gimmicks. Thus, street fighting man Adrian Adonis doing his best Gorgeous George (or Goldust before Goldust) pips everything else to the dubious honour of inclusion. It somehow felt out of place in the colourful world of the WWF.

Adonis was also gone from the roster by May, so it's actually quite a feat that he was able to stink up the place enough to beat out everything else that year. Things didn't get off to a great start when Adrian and The Missing Link were traded to Jimmy Hart in return for King Kong Bundy's contract getting handed to Bobby Heenan.

Jimmy was a top manager, but he wasn't a main event gaffer at that point compared to the 'Brain'. Then, in time for WrestleMania III, Adonis started a feud with Roddy Piper, who obviously made light of Adrian's appearance and effeminate nature. That was a soft target for 'Hot Rod', but the rivalry was a noticeable step down from being in the main event at 'Mania I and warring with celebrity Mr. T at 'Mania 2.

Not many bought 'Adorable' as a threat to Piper in their 'Hair vs. Hair' match.

You've got to give Adonis some credit for willingly giving up on weightlifting, tanning etc so he'd come across as a heel slob, but losing his look and reinventing himself as a kiss-blowing villain didn't do much for the man's WWF career.

The crummy dress code excuse used to explain his departure suggests that top brass couldn't wait to get rid of him.
