With WWE’s recent attempts to re-establish their 'Big Four' PPVs, it can be easy to overlook how truly amazing some past SummerSlam events were.

SummerSlam 2001 was WWE's first PPV since the inaugural Invasion event kicked off the angle and they succeeded beautifully in building on the positives from that show and amping it up for a Big Four offering. The event got off to a great start with Lance Storm losing his Intercontinental Championship to a flourishing Edge. What followed were some strong matches with a multitude of different styles.

Jeff Hardy and Rob Van Dam built on their match from Invasion and tore the house down with risk taking manoeuvres and big spots. Eagle eye viewers will notice that this match was actually longer than the main event which, when you consider that this was for the Hardcore title, makes it pretty amazing. The Invasion angle might have its detractors but fans of the Hardcore belt can't be in that category.

Unfortunately, the show was not without it’s problems. Kane and Undertaker taking on DDP and Kanyon was a grueling slog of a squash that did nothing to help any of the competitors.

The two World Championship matches, like in most of the PPVs of the time, were fantastic. The actual main event was the lesser of the two. The Rock took on Booker T and Kurt Angle battled Stone Cold in a frantic, hard hitting match that elevated both men in their amazing feud.
