WWE: John Cena vs Randy Orton - 10 Perspectives On Unifying The World Titles

5. One Title Will Add Prestige To The Meaning Of Being Champion

steve austin When Stone Cold Steve Austin reigned as the biggest star in pro wrestling, there was only ever one belt. Austin had some stiff competition for that belt, in an era which boasted Shawn Michaels, The Rock, Triple H, Undertaker and Kurt Angle. Nevertheless Austin did manage to become champion on Six occasions. The WCW title only came in to being in 2001, when Austin was already a 5 time champion - and the only belt that Steve ever held was the original WWF title. In the entertainment era, the achievement of multiple reigns has been watered down. It is so much easier to become a multi time world champion. Cena has been champ 14 times, Orton 11 times and Edge also 11 times. I don't want to take anything away from those guys, but these almost best ever kind of numbers do not reflect the reality of their level. The likes of Austin and Rock are far greater talents. If WWE went back to having one belt, then the credibility, prestige and honour of being champion would be far more revered. It could also produce a much better under card and bring back meaning to the IC title. It would be natural for the IC title to fill the void the big gold belt leaves. Going back to the good old days of one champion could result in a real boom in business for the WWE.
