There was a lot of noise made before the show about AJ Styles potentially being a short-lived WWE Champion on SmackDown Live. Styles only captured the biggest title on the brand at Backlash from Dean Ambrose, so it would have been fairly perplexing to see him lose it at No Mercy.

Cheerfully, AJ Styles remains WWE Champion. Into the bargain, he was also written to pin none other than John Cena himself. This marks the third time in 2016 that Styles has been handed a pinfall win over Cena, something nobody could have guessed would happen when calendars turned from 2015 into the current year.

For his part, Dean Ambrose was really only there to get his title rematch and beef up the numbers in the match. The 'Lunatic Fringe' seemed like the least likely to leave with the belt, his title reign was an experiment that will have to wait for a repeat. No Mercy was not the right time for that.

Styles is still on top and his victory was greeted favourably by the live audience.
