WWE: Owen Hart Lawsuit Finally Settled
The long standing lawsuit over WWE's right to use the name and image of the late Owen Hart has finally been settled, according to a report in The Huffington Post published this week. Martha Hart - wife of the late WWE wrestler - originally sued World Wrestling Entertainment back in 2010 alleging that the WWE had failed to pay her royalties due after using Owen's image on their programming which was a violation of a contract restricting such uses which has been in place since his death in 1999. According to Martha, WWE distributed DVD's of past WWE events that featured Owen on them without compensating Owen's estate. Hart had been in the midst of a successful run under the moniker The Blue Blazer on WWF/E programming when he fell to his death from the rafters of the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Mo before a live television audience. It was during his entrance when his bungee slipped as he was being lowered from the ceiling and he fell, striking his head on a corner buckle. At the time the Hart family sued WWE - then known as the WWF - for $18 million claiming wrongful death. The current lawsuit is Martha's final suit against WWE. According to The Huffington Post, Mrs Hart announced the settlement to the press this week but declined to comment any further on the details. When quizzed WWE confirmed the settlement but also declined to comment. No further details of the settlement were disclosed but many are hopeful that this may soon open the door for WWE to induct Owen into the WWE Hall of Fame which has so far been avoided for fears it may open old wounds within the Hart family.
