WWE Paul Heyman DVD Review: 13 Things You Should Know
6. ECW Exit And WWE Entrance
"I had an open offer to come to WWE" Heyman reveals on his 2001 ECW exit. He debuted in March 2001, controversially while ECW was still in business, though he didn't officially sign until later that year. "I don't think I signed a WWE contract until I was two months into it." The reason for that is revealed for the first time in the documentary, Joey Styles elaborating on why Heyman did what he did. "When you file for bankruptcy, any cheque 90 days beforehand can be recalled. He waited 90 days to protect the wrestlers. That's why Paul was in WWE before ECW declared bankruptcy." So while some ECW talent were criticising Heyman, he was actually acting in their interests. From the off, Heyman had an up and down relationship with Vince McMahon in WWE. "Vince working with Paul on commentary was interesting" Stephanie McMahon laughs. "He did everything Vince doesn't like."
