WWE Paul Heyman DVD Review: 13 Things You Should Know

7. The Self Destruction Of ECW

"Every single day of ECW was a battle for survival, every day we survived was a miracle" Heyman bemoans. The efforts of the promoter were starting to be counterproductive to the business. "Everything Paul wanted to happen happened, but it bankrupted the company" Joey Styles explains. Heyman was creatively doing brilliant things but commercially the product wasn't operating effectively. Cheques started to bounce. "He would lie to you if he had to. He was known for lies" Raven states. "It's popular to paint this picture of me and I accept that criticism," Heyman says in his defence, "I'm not getting paid either. My balls get cut off long before yours do. You can leave, I can't" In the end, ECW's problems consumed Paul. He stopped attending shows and Tommy Dreamer effectively became the boss. "Paul was a disaster at the end of ECW," Joey Styles reveals, "He stopped coming to the shows. He was physically, mentally, emotionally burned out." Still, Heyman didn't believe ECW would actually go out of business. Ticket sales were hot, the video game did well, DVDs and video did well, merchandise was up - the problem was that the company just couldn't get a TV deal. It killed them.
