WWE: Ranking Undertaker's 21 WrestleMania Victories Worst To Best
12. Kane, WrestleMania XIV
While WrestleMania XIV may not be remembered for any truly great matches, it was very much the culmination of some outstanding rivalries as WWE entered it hugely successful Attitude Era. There was no better or detailed story than the one involving Undertaker and his long-lost brother, Kane. At the April 1997 In Your House: Revenge Of The Taker pay-per-view, Undertaker threw a fireball in Paul Bearer's face. This action enraged the Dead Man's former manager, who revealed to the world that Undertaker was responsible for the fire that killed his own mother and father. Referring to his former charge as a murderer, Bearer also revealed that the Phenom's brother, Kane, was still alive and on his way back into Undertaker's life. That revelation shook Undertaker to his core. At the October Badd Blood: In Your House event, Kane made his debut and cost Undertaker the very first Hell in a Cell match against Shawn Michaels. Despite the physical pain and mental anguish he was put through by his brother and former manager throughout the remainder of 1997, Undertaker refused to fight Kane, citing a personal vow he made to his parents. After being trapped inside a casket that was then set on fire by the Big Red Monster, however, he changed his tune. He returned, promising that he would walk through fire to face Kane at WrestleMania XIV, setting the stage for an expertly built match. Undertaker and Kane dealt punishing blows and high-impact manoeuvres to one another in front of the WWE faithful that had jam-packed the Fleet Center in Boston. At many points, it appeared as if the younger brother not only had his older sibling's number but also would end his undefeated streak before it ever really became an integral part of the WrestleMania hype. Everywhere Undertaker turned, Kane was waiting for him with another power move to take him down. So determined was Kane to defeat his brother, and so full of hate was he, that it took three Tombstone piledrivers to keep the masked man down. The match most certainly was not pretty from a traditional wrestling standpoint but it was a truly epic encounter that featured superb storytelling and a finish that put over Kane as not only a threat to his brother but as serious competition to the entire WWE roster. Undertaker had a great deal to do with the early success of the Kane character and his work in the WrestleMania XIV match lent credibility and legitimacy to his opponent, something that means a lot to both management and fans alike.
