5. Edge, WrestleMania XXIV
Edge was the hottest heel in wrestling in 2008, thanks to his on-screen relationship with general manager Vickie Guerrero and his leadership of the faction known simply as La Familia. He tormented some of the most popular stars in the sport, including CM Punk and Rey Mysterio but found himself quite intimidated by the fact that he would be forced to defend his title against Elimination Chamber winner, and number one contender, Undertaker. After all, it was the Dead Man who Edge screwed out of the championship back in November of 2007 when he returned at the Survivor Series and again in December, when he debuted Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder as his cronies. Now, he had a chance to get revenge on the Rated R Superstar, take the World Heavyweight Championship away from him at the same time and do it at the one event he had never lost at. To the surprise of some, the match received the coveted main event spot and considering the ride the competitors would take the fans in Orlando on, it was completely justified. Whereas other Superstars target the legs of the Phenom due, in large part, to his impressive size advantage over most of them, Edge targeted the lower back of his opponent, effectively taking the base away from the Dead Man. A particularly nasty spot came when Edge dropped him back-first on the guardrail. He followed up with a single leg Boston Crab, which he then altered by digging his knee in the lower back of the challenger. Undertaker's unmatched striking ability kept him in the match but the opportunistic Edge took advantage of any opening he could find to regain control. As the Phenom demonstrated at WrestleMania 23 the year prior, he had a great understanding of when to institute his signature offense to garner a desired reaction from the audience and create the dramatic nearfalls that fueled the later stages of the bout and utilized that understanding to his advantage and he and Edge had the crowd on its feet late in their clash. Edge kicked out of a chokeslam and Last Ride while Undertaker survived a Spear and outside interference from Ryder and Hawkins. For the first time, Undertaker scored a submission victory at the Showcase of the Immortals, making Edge tap to Hell's Gate. The match was ripe with counter wrestling and, arguably, the first great match the Dead Man had at WrestleMania where brawling and weapons were not heavily featured. The WrestleMania XXIV main event was a more traditional wrestling match with a great heel in his prime taking on one of wrestling most respected stars for the opportunity to put that first blemish on Undertaker's WrestleMania resume. Thankfully, he was unsuccessful.
