WWE Royal Rumble: 10 Most Criminally Overlooked Matches
5. Shawn Michaels Vs. The Undertaker - Casket Match, 1998
Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker had what are considered two of the greatest matches of all-time at WrestleMania XXV and XXVI, in 2009 and 2010. Those matches have (rightfully) been lionised by the company and fans and wrestlers continue to gush over what incredible performances both men put forward on the Grandest Stage of Them All. However, it would be unwise to forget that HBK and The Deadman had other sterling scraps more than a decade before their pair of WrestleMania classics. One such match went on last at the 1998 Royal Rumble PPV. Michaels was in full-on immature DX mode at this point, and Undertaker felt the only way to get rid of the nuisance was to literally bury him. Thus, the Casket Match stipulation was added. Unfortunately, the casket a direct factor in Michaels' crippling back injury, which forced him to temporarily retire just two months later. If you look beyond that wince-inducing bump, however, there's an enjoyable match to be found here. Michaels tried everything he could to put away 'Taker, including piledriving him into the steel steps and enlisting the help of the New Age Outlaws and Los Boriquas, but it was Kane who was the deciding factor, drilling his brother with a chokeslam into the casket, before setting it on fire. Another week, another attempted murder by Kane... Not as good as the Hell in a Cell a few months before, but another damn fine gimmick match courtesy of two all-time greats.
