WWE Royal Rumble Debut Wrestlers: Where Are They Now?
14. Sam Houston
One of countless wrestlers to run a cowboy gimmick in WWE during the '80s and '90s, Sam Houston joined the company in May 1987, and was largely used as a preliminary wrestler. He could never parlay his success on wrestling's smaller stages into a decent run with Vince McMahon's company, but still enjoyed a near 15-minute spell in the first Royal Rumble.
Houston then went winless during a house show series with Big Boss Man, and was regularly losing to the likes of Curt Hennig, Terry Taylor, and Haku. He remained a mid-level jobber to the stars until his 1991 release, when he joined WCW for a brief run in 1991, then another in 1993. Now 53 years old, Houston has never officially retired from the ring, but he has wrestled just four times since 1998.
Houston is Jake "The Snake" Roberts' half-brother, and former WWE Women's Champion Rockin' Robin is his younger sister. He has endured a turbulent personal life since leaving the wrestling spotlight and was sent to jail for repeated DUI arrests in August 2005, but only served part of an initial 10-year sentence. His New Orleans home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina that same month, and he re-emerged with his own promotion, Mid South Entertainment, in 2009. The company lasted just one show, however, and Houston has worked in construction ever since.
