4. Shawn Michaels vs. Mr. Perfect - Summerslam, August 30th 1993
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVLB4KYq6aQ Perhaps a hallmark of what could have gone wrong in the Michaels vs. Benjamin match, here was a match that again, on paper, sounded like it would be a wonderful contest. Instead, we were given a sloppy match between two wrestlers who were clearly not on top of their game. This was the beginning of Shawn's descent in to a number of drug and attitude problems, whilst Mr. Perfect was struggling with his own back injury. The tone for the match was perhaps set with the opening back-and-forth exchange resulting in both men seemingly colliding in the middle of the ring, though it was clear that this was perhaps not the intended outcome, as the commentary team quickly tried to cover up the error. A sloppy, plodding affair followed as the two men traded a few big moves before returning to a series of rest holds. The limitations to the match were obvious; Shawn's cocky heel stick was still obviously much better suited to Perfect, who was forced to play a questionable face role. A backbreaker in to a back hold submission perhaps exemplified the problems with the match - neither Michaels nor Perfect seemed to be making it look like there was any real pressure applied for a submission that lasted nearly half a minute. The end thankfully came when Michaels rolled in to the ring, seemingly tripping referee Earl Hebner up and knocking him to the floor. Diesel shoved Perfect in to the turnbuckle, whilst Hebner counted Perfect out with his back turned to the situation. An abrupt and dull end left the entire match feeling flat, arguably a fitting result for a "must-see" match gone awry.
