WWE SummerSlam 2002: 5 Awesome Things And 5 Things That Sucked

3. Fans Cheering The Heel Lesnar

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUy1b3v7irY Lesnar was supposed to be the heel in his match with The Rock, but if you watch the match without knowing any of the backstory then you would think that Lesnar was the face. That's because the New York crowd cheered him for the majority of match and especially at the end. The Rock generally wasn't booed much when he was a face, but this came at a time when he was gone for a few months for a movie break and after this show he was gone for half a year. Fans started to pick on him not being in WWE as often so they turned their support to Lesnar since he was new and in some ways more interesting their eyes. Due to cheers at this show and some of the ones that followed, WWE made the mistake of turning Lesnar into a babyface three months later. It was too soon for that. Lesnar was best used as a heel bully that had Paul Heyman as his mouthpiece. He really wasn't ready to go on his own when he did.
