This writer previously said that AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe had to open SummerSlam this year; the general thought process there was that WWE would be doing themselves a favour by keeping both world title matches as far apart as possible, and it'd also give Styles and Joe bags of time to weave a good opener.

This writer was wrong.

Bringing Dean Ambrose out first was the right call. His revved-up entrance music got the crowd in New York going early, and the ensuing din fans made was a terrific way to open the main card. Best of all, Ambrose didn't sell their excitement, and instead looked every bit the hard man who was there to help Seth Rollins become new IC Champ.

After his hot return on last Monday's Raw, people were eager to see the new and improved Deano, and WWE obliged from the off in Brooklyn. Good on them, because it was the correct decision and gave SummerSlam a nice boost.
