Fans were properly stunned when Daniel Bryan beat AJ Styles on SmackDown and then laced him post-match with an evil smile. For the first time since 2012, the ultimate underdog was heel, and attention turned to seeing how WWE would play his new villainy against Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series.

They didn't.

Aside from a few menacing glances here and there, refusing to do his 'Yes' entrance routine and a desperation low blow, Bryan reverted back to his underdog comfort zone. He dutifully took a pasting from Lesnar, including a bevy of suplexes, before launching his comeback. It'll take more than that for fans to hate him the way SmackDown hinted they might.

Maybe it's because Brock is such a relentless killing machine. That could be why fans in LA cheered Bryan on as he fought back from the brink. Or, perhaps it'll take time before people en masse are willing to accept the idea that one of WWE's most beloved stars ever will be an effective baddie again.
