WWE Survivor Series Begins The Road To WrestleMania

Cm Punk Best Before I began writing this article, I had just finished watching Survivor Series 2002, a rather underrated entry in the Survivor Series back catalogue. That year, we witnessed the first ever Elimination Chamber match, won by Shawn Michaels in an instant classic, alongside an undercard filled with brilliant matches. Now, the WWE handled the buildup to that Survivor Series very, very well. The SummerSlam that preceded it featured one of the most brutal Street Fights in WWE history between Michaels and Triple H, and the world witnessed Brock Lesnar topple The Rock to become the youngest WWE Champion of all time. Lesnar would carry the title through to Survivor Series, and the Michaels/Triple H feud was as hot as ever going into the Elimination Chamber match. Fast-forward eleven years and you have a very similar situation in terms of momentum. We all witnessed a compelling SummerSlam, and despite the disappointment of the follow-up PPV, Night of Champions, the ball hasn't stopped rolling one little bit. However, the WWE are under seismic pressure to make the 30th anniversary of WrestleMania the greatest yet. With Survivor Series now only two months away, there is still a sizable amount of storyline development that needs to happen to ensure that the WWE ends 2013 on a bang, and kick-start a successful Road to WrestleMania. It might not seem like a problem to some, but the hardcore fans know that the expectations have never been higher. To me, and I'm pretty sure most WWE fans will agree with me here, Survivor Series is a big deal. The history, heritage and its status as the second longest running PPV of all time means fans will be expecting a memorable night. It is possible that the foundations for WrestleMania will be set in stone with Survivor Series. Look back to 2011 - The Rock and John Cena teamed up just four months before they headlined WrestleMania, and although they were booked as a tag team, the idea was to see how well (or badly) they would perform as a unit, sparking heat for their eventual showdown at The Showcase of the Immortals. That match marked the first time that The Rock and Cena competed within the same ring - an historic moment, however you look at it - and it got the entire WWE universe pumped for their match well in advance. Although we know very little about the card for the 30th Anniversary of WrestleMania, we can all pretty much guarantee that come November 24th inside Boston's TD Garden, the early stages and planning of WrestleMania 30 will take shape. It's time to take a look at some rumours, possible developments to current story lines, and fresh stories that may arise in time for, or just after, Survivor Series.
