WWE Ultimate Warrior DVD Review: 10 Things You Should Know
7. Getting Over And Taking The IC Title
Warrior is regularly criticised for his ring work, but upon watching the collection of matches, you will see just how over this guy was with the crowd. He got huge reactions, he was wildly popular, fans loved cheering him on. Wrestlers nowadays would kill for Warrior's kind of reactions. In that respect, he did his job better than almost anyone. His ring style worked for him, it got him over. Warrior puts this down to his work ethic. He emphasises how hard he worked to get over, he says he connected because he was just an amped up version of himself. Which is kind of worrying when you think about it! The popularity of Warrior with the crowds eventually seen him win the Intercontinental title. He claims that everyone backstage was happy he was getting the title, it meant they all made more money. That's definitely a contentious statement given the number of former talent who criticise Warrior, but it was possibly true at the time when Warrior beat Honky Tonk Man at SummerSlam 1988. He really puts himself over as a star who couldn't be held back upon winning the IC Title. "Men wanted to be me, women with me and kids felt safe with me," he claims. One thing's for sure, he certainly knew how to wind a crowd up. His style worked. Instead of doing flips off ladders, some WWE talent could learn a hell of a lot from watching how Warrior did almost nothing in the SummerSlam '88 match and still got a reaction as loud as anyone gets in 2014. One thing I would dispute, the inclusion of the Warrior vs Heenan weasel match on this set, which Warrior states "was a lot of fun."
