20 Best Matches From WWE's 'C' Shows

3. CM Punk Vs. Sheamus - Main Event

The very first main event of Main Event (heh) was a rare treat: a champion vs. champion match. WWE champ CM Punk battled World Heavyweight champ Sheamus. Such a marquee match-up is exceedingly rare on a third-tier show like Main Event, and, even more astonishly, this one boasted  a clean finish. Uh, mostly. It was decisive at least.

Both men were in the midst of impressive reigns; Sheamus had been defeating all comers for seven months, and Punk was coming up on a whole year. Placing these two incredibly strong champions in direct competition was a bold move, but ultimately a brilliant one.

Sheamus is obviously the stronger of the two, so the story of the match is Punk trying to keep his opponent's momentum to a minimum. He's wily, and his veteran cunning enables him to avoid Sheamus' biggest bombs over and over.

A turnbuckle pad gets torn off in the early goings, and Punk's awareness of it pays off at the finish; he avoids a Brogue Kick and Sheamus brains himself on it. Punk picks up the win, if only by the skin of his teeth.
