10 Things You Learn Binge Watching Every WWE Raw From 2006

Ballsy heel turns and a LOT of juvenile humour spotlighted WWE's flagship brand in '06.

The cherished 'Attitude Era' is remembered for being financially lucrative, creatively bursting at the seams and raunchy as hell. Ask fans to name a few things from that time period and raunch and/or toilet humour would likely be amongst them. Incredibly, 'Attitude' had nothing on 'Ruthless Aggression' in terms of pushing the envelope.

WWE would eventually go PG in 2008, but the era between 2002-2007 laid bare some of the most over the top, salacious and downright disgusting scenes in company lore. It was often sophomoric in tone, which suited reunited D-Generation X buddies Triple H and Shawn Michaels down to the ground. They were delighted to turn the clock back to 1997/1998, then go a little further.

In 2006, Raw belonged to John Cena, but the DX reunion, Edge's rise up the ranks to main event status, the second ECW One Night Stand Show and a ragtag bunch of returns, debuts and hokey gimmick ideas fleshed the flagship right out. Of course, not everything worked, but at least Vince McMahon had found his new poster boy (Cena) and was trying to build stars elsewhere.

A unique Draft (very unique!), Ric Flair's continuing desire to prove he could hang with the best, one of the ballsiest heel turns ever and even Trish Stratus calling it a day after a largely forgotten romance angle stood out when binging WWE's main TV show in '06.

SmackDown wasn't Vince's priority yet still produced some good stuff. Meanwhile, Raw was getting raunchy and juvenile all at once.

10. This Forgotten Trish Stratus Romance

Remember this? Probably not.

Trish Stratus started an onscreen romance with Carlito on the 26 June 2006 Raw when he saved her from an attack by Melina and Johnny Nitro. After that, the new couple briefly feuded with Edge and Lita, but their storyline fling ended when Trish retired at Unforgiven in September. It isn't something many people talk about now when reminiscing about Trish's career.

Years later, Carlito admitted to Chris Van Vliet that he didn’t really like the onscreen romance or think it was the right thing for his character at the time. If anything, Carly believed he should've been kept separate from the Divas and presented as a more credible worker between the ropes who could get the job done on his own.

WWE would get back to that, but they were intrigued by the thought of Stratus and Mr. Caribbean Cool smooching on episodes of Raw for a while. This was just the latest in a long, long line of romances Trish had in front of the cameras, but it isn't one fans discuss when touring back through her Hall Of Fame runs with the promotion.

Looking back, it is slightly strange that WWE thought this was the way to go with either worker. Stratus must've made it known behind the scenes that she planned to wind down her in-ring career, and Carlito was coming off a tag-team run then feud with Chris Masters. He needed something big and impactful, and it probs didn't help when he came lovesick for Trish instead.

Score another for forgotten WWE couples.
