10 Most Anticipated Comics Of 2014

10. Marvelman/Miracleman by Alan Moore and Garry Leach (Marvel)

Miracleman Technically this isn't a new comic but it has been out of print for a long time and a lot of people who've heard about this series, but haven't been able to get their hands on it, will finally get their chance this year. Miracleman €“ or Marvelman as he was originally known €“ is a British Captain Marvel knockoff comic from the 1950s that, unsurprisingly based on its origins, has been mired in legal problems for years. Alan Moore's run on Marvelman in 1982 has been hailed as one of Moore's masterpieces but due to copyright issues, the comic has been long out of print. However in 2009 Marvel acquired the rights to reprint the series in full and announced at the 2013 New York Comic Con that they would be reprinting the original Alan Moore 80s Marvelman comics leading up to and including Neil Gaiman's issues when the character had been renamed Miracleman. When Michael Moran says the work "kimota" (atomic backwards, but spelt with a k), he transforms into Marvelman and gains superpowers like flight, etc. In Moore's run, Moran (Marvelman/Miracleman) is grown up, married, and unable to remember his superhero past or the magic word to transform him into his superhero alter ego. Like a lot of Moore's 80s comics, the series explores the concept of the superhero and their impact on the world, both positively and negatively, and the mythology of the character. Originally called Marvelman, the publisher of the series was pressured by Marvel to change the title to Miracleman which is when Gaiman stepped in to write for the comic - though he never finished his story arc. With the reprint of the comic, Gaiman has been given the chance €“ after decades! €“ to finally complete his story arc. While this is exciting news, Gaiman's Miracleman finale isn't expected to appear until 2016 at the earliest. Meanwhile, a whole new generation of readers will get the chance to experience Alan Moore's Miracleman for the first time with these reprints, digitally restored and fully re-lettered. As an interesting side-note, Alan Moore has such a dislike for any association with either Marvel or DC that he and Marvel have agreed not to use his name on the reprinted comics €“ he will instead be referred to as "The Original Writer"! The first reprinted issue comes out later this month.
