9. Ms Marvel by G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona (Marvel)
Marvel made headlines last November when it was announced they were introducing a new superhero into the Marvel Universe who was also a Muslim. Kamala Khan is a second generation Pakistani girl living in New Jersey who's also a typical middle-class American teenager growing up in a conservative Muslim family. And then she discovers she has superpowers! Kamala will have the ability to shape-shift, growing or shrinking her body before being able to take on the appearance of other people, as she takes the name Ms Marvel (previously used by Carol Danvers, the current Captain Marvel). G. Willow Wilson, who herself converted to Islam in university, is writing the series and will showcase the conflict of traditional Muslim values and contemporary American society. Kamala's family is made up of a very conservative brother, an overbearing mother worrying about teen pregnancy, and a father who wants his daughter to become a doctor. While Kamala's faith is part of her story, it won't be the focus of the series as the book shows her exploring her identity at a turbulent time in her life. The series begins in February.
