6. Superior Spider-Man: Goblin Nation by Dan Slott and Giuseppe Camuncoli (Marvel)
The classic Spider-Man villain, Green Goblin, has been noticeably absent during the Superior Spider-Man run but this year he returns with a bang! The mysterious Goblin King has been amassing his forces underground ready to assault New York and challenge Spider-Man for dominance of the city. But who's behind the mask Norman Osborn or someone else? Goblin was classically Spidey's #1 villain but was never able to truly defeat Peter Parker, unlike Doc Ock who is now wearing Peter's body like a meat puppet! Relegated to second place, Spidey's two greatest villains go toe-to-toe in the new five issue story arc, Goblin Nation. Series writer Dan Slott has said that this is the storyline he might be remembered most for for better or worse as he reintroduces the classic character into the series. Like now-deceased Spidey villains Massacre and Spider Slayer (both killed by Superior Spider-Man), Slott has said that he's not afraid of killing off key characters a la Game of Thrones and that this is the storyline Superior has been building up to - is this the end of Superior Spider-Man? The prelude to Goblin Nation kicks off in late January with Superior Spider-Man #26 as Spidey tangles with the Avengers, and begins with Superior Spider-Man #27.NOW in February.
