9. East Of West

Written by Jonathan Hickman (Avengers and New Avengers), 'East Of West' is a science-fiction Western set in a dystopian vision of the USA. The protagonist is Death (yeah, that Death), who is pursuing vengeance on the people he believes betrayed him and murdered his wife. Oh, and he is also being zeroed in on by the other three Horsemen of the Apocalypse, who have been reborn in the bodies of children. They're mad at Death for abandoning them and throwing a wrench into their plans for ending the world, y'see. 'East Of West' is definitely a weird series, but it's also definitely a very good one. The art, by Nick Dragotta (Fantastic Four) gives the series a remarkably accessible look, which makes the plot easier to connect to. Dragotta is a brilliant superhero artist, and he brings that eye for a dynamic image to this story. We'd recommend this one to any fans of sci-fi and/or fiction that isn't afraid to go a bit odd. It's a rewarding experience and not the first time that a Jonathan Hickman series will appear on our countdown.
