10 Awesome Image Comics Series You Should Be Reading
10. Outcast
We're big fans of horror fiction, whether that be on film or television, video games or books, or even comics. However, we're of the opinion that a good horror comic is quite hard to come by. We think it might be because comics lack the audio component that can be used to great effect in horror. It's very hard to manufacture a jolt of shock in a comic book, which is one of our most beloved aspects of the visceral thrill of a horror story (if executed correctly). Consequently, a horror comic has to go a similar route to a horror novel and try and get under the reader's skin, planting insidious and terrifying thoughts in your mind as you read. A good horror comic will see the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end and a feeling of dread creep into your brain. In many ways, writers of horror comics need to be more skilled than a storyteller in a movie, as they can't simply resort to loud noises to frighten. Luckily, the first issue of 'Outcast' does get under your skin. Written by 'Walking Dead' supremo Kirkman (who is also the current C.O.O. of the company) and drawn by Paul Azaceta, 'Outcast' is a creepy proposition. It's the story of Kyle Barnes, a man whose family have been victims of demonic possession since his childhood. With the help of his local reverend, the series will delve into what forces are behind the possessions and why Kyle seems to have special abilities.
