This doesn't even take into account one of the greatest stunts of comic book history when Grant Morrison wrote himself into the title (and, consequently, DC Comics' continuity) in his last issue on the book. While this may be an ego-inspired gimmick when delivered by any other writer, Morrison used the Animal Man's meeting of his writer (and, consequently, for all intents and purposes, God), to both explain and clarify the characters life to himself in the context of both comic book cliche and his intentions as a writer. This was before the writer summoned several bad guys to beat the hero up brutally, while he urges people to support PETA.
