10 Batman Villains That Have Only Appeared Once (So Far)

6. The Jackal Of The Underworld

Screen Shot 2013-08-02 at 19.44.01 Like another twisted madman on this list, The Jackal of the underworld was obsessed with ancient Egypt, in the Jackal€™s case specifically; he was fascinated by their mythology. Dressing himself up like the ancient Egyptian God of the underworld (and not at all unlike a Jaffa from Stargate), The Jackal of the Underworld (in reality a man identified only as €œGibson€) adopted the personality of a wrathful Anubis. As if that wasn€™t bat-shit crazy enough, the mad motherfungler took advantage of Gotham City€™s extensive underground cave network in order to commit his crimes, using the €˜underworld€™ both literally and figuratively, to his advantage. Once apprehended by Batman and Robin, he vanished from the pages of DC comics and was never seen again. Giboson€™s first (and last) appearance was published in 1958 and it hasn€™t been re-printed since (at least, not anywhere that I can find). The idea of a mythology-obsessed villain taking advantage of subterranean Gotham is simply too good not to be used again somewhere. It might work better if Gibson adapted his persona to include other €˜underworld€™ Gods and figures (gaining a three-headed dog named €˜Cerberus€™ for example and taking his costume cues from different deities, Calendar Man style). There is a potential to have some real fun with the character, so I hope somebody at DC 'digs him up' eventually.

I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction. I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long! If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it). I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work. Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that! Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?) Latcho Drom, - CQ
