10 Best Batman Analogues

2. Nighthawk

Nighthawk Marvel

Batman and Superman have been intrinsically linked almost from their inceptions. So when a writer uses one as an archetype, it's safe to bet the other will not be far behind, and that's what happened in Mark Gruenwald's Squadron Supreme series for Marvel.

This time the question was, "what would happen if Superman decided he should run the world?". The answer, as most DC fans knew, was Batman would put him down.

The Squadron, led by Hyperion, believe that they can create a utopia and take control of the world, leading Nighthawk to quit the team. Slowly but surely, Hyperion's good intentions become corrupted, and the promised utopia becomes a totalitarian state ruled by superheroes. Nighthawk, believing that heroes should serve and not lead, amasses a force of reformed villains and unknown heroes to take down the Squadron.

In the ensuing battle, Hyperion finally realises that Nighthawk was right and that his actions have caused far more harm than good. The Squadron disband and control returns to legally elected officials.
