Jaime Madrox is a changeling, the genetic predecessor to mutants whose powers manifest themselves at birth, rather than puberty. His first duplicate was created when his doctor smacked his bottom. Forced to wear a special suit to regulate his powers and growing up in isolation after the deaths of his parents, Madrox chose to relocate to the Muir Island Research Center with Dr. Moira MacTaggert instead of joining the X-Men.

Madrox aka Multiple Man, still found himself drawn into multiple mutant conflicts, despite himself, and soon joined the government-sponsored investigative team of mutants called X-Factor, which was led by Havok. After that team ended, he struck out on his own and opened XXX Investigations, which later changed its name to X-Factor Investigations as so many of its members had been part of that team. They settled in a part of New York that became known as “Mutant Town.”

Jamie also began sending dupes out into the world to live lives and gain experiences and skills that he would learn upon absorbing them. One of his dupes that settled in Chicago became the “world’s greatest detective” who learned things so important and so terrible that he didn’t want Multiple Man to know them. In X-Factor #17, he chose death by cop rather than letting the knowledge be passed to Jaime Prime.
