Disney's acquisition of the Star Wars license might be looked upon today with universal acclaim, but it wasn't considered as such by a vocal minority of fans who had latched onto the litany of expanded universe titles that had released prior to 2012.

The acquisition did, of course, reset the franchise's continuity. Said continuity had been built up largely by Dark Horse's comic book series, and with Marvel being under the ownership of Disney, it only made sense for the company to bear the responsibility of reconstructing the EU. Titles like Darth Vader, Lando, and Princess Leia soon debuted to critical success, but it's a new character - Doctor Aphra - who represents the best among them.

Introduced in the Darth Vader series, Aphra immediately went on to establish a firm presence in Marvel's EU titles, and the character's solo series - written by industry big wig Kieron Gillen - is the standout one among them. The series has gone from strength to strength in 2017, with Aphra having broken away from the Sith Lord, and it continues to be the best Star Wars title out there.

If you're not content with the myriad of novels out there covering the mythos, and you're looking for something to tide you over until The Last Jedi, then Aphra is definitely something worth checking out.
