8. Vampirella Vs. Reanimator #1

Batman Who Laughs variant
Dynamite Entertainment

Herbert West- the Reanimator - is on a quest to truly understand and control life by resurrecting the dead. On his quest to perfect his reagent, he now is attempting to reanimate an Aztec god of death! The only kink in his plan is the vampire warrior Vampirella of Drakulon, who had faced the Aztec god and knows the dangers of waking sleeping gods!

After some cult classic films, there is a basic understanding of The Reanimator and his mission, while Vampirella is a bit of a wild card. A character who's been around for a while but most people only know her for the red scarf she wears as a singlet. This book gives a basic rundown of both character's histories, though keeping it to a bare minimum in a semi-natural way to set up the confrontation that comes in the rest of the miniseries.

Cullen Bunn is no stranger to the indie scene so creating a pseudo-throwback B-movie feel in the writing just adds to overall enjoyment, be it the actual plot or even a small moment where West asks his undead minions to devour people a bit more quietly. Following that trend, Blacky Shepard's art pays homage to the classic Vampirella anthology series, with black and white paneling, except adding splotches of red for the bloody bits.

It is a great start to what is undoubtedly going to be a fun ride!
