Individually Greg Rucka, Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns, Mark Waid and Keith Geffen have created some of the most important works in the medium's history. In the aftermath of Infinite Crisis, DC would skip a year of continuity and launch all its books under the One Year Later banner. It would then announce 52, which featured all the men above producing a weekly comic that would fill in the events of that year—a year where Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman were absent.

The first issue deals with the aftermath of Infinite Crisis and introduces the unlikely collection of heroes who would lead the story. It not only shows just how seamless the five men's writing would be, but it also sets up countless mysteries and story arcs. The creators gave each character time to explain who they are, where they are and hint at what this year will have in store for them. Readers could be mistaken for thinking a single person wrote it.

DC tried a couple of times, unsuccessfully, to recreate a story told over 52 weeks, proving that this was a once in a lifetime event.
