10 Best New DC Characters Of The 21st Century
9. Miss Martian
M'gann M'orzz (or Megan Morse on Earth) was created by Geoff Johns for his run on Teen Titans after DC's editorial told him that he couldn't use Supergirl, who was then a part of the Legion of Super-Heroes. Miss Martian is introduced as the niece of Martian Manhunter, but secretly uses her shape-shifting abilities to hide that fact that she is actually a White Martian; the same species that enslaved and slaughtered the Green Martians.
Despite debuting in the comics originally, Miss Martian's popularity soared through her inclusion as a main character in the critically acclaimed Young Justice. In the series, M'gann is 48 years old in terms of Earth years, but only 16 by Martian biological standards. A powerful telepath, M'gann struggles to adapt to life on Earth, often not understanding invasion of privacy and modelling her image off of the main character of an old sitcom. From this sitcom, M'gann also adopts the charming catchphrase "Hello Megan!", which she exclaims in frustration of the obvious.
However, M'gann proves to be one the show's most complex characters, hiding her White Martian heritage out of shame and slowly become abusive with her ever-growing powers in order to retrieve information from enemies quickly and even tamper with the memories of Superboy.
Miss Martian's character development is subtle and affecting, drawing on themes of boundaries and consequences that aren't always painted in a sympathetic light. Ultimately, her story becomes a sensitive one of seeking forgiveness, even when you know it's not entirely deserved.
