1. Hellboy
The greatest non-DC/Marvel superhero is Big Red himself, Hellboy! "Born" in the closing stages of World War 2 when Rasputin summoned demons from another dimension to our world, Hellboy was adopted by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm (pronounced "broom") and raised as his surrogate son in the newly founded Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence, or BPRD for short. Since then, he's grown up to become the greatest supernatural detective ever and harbinger of the end of the world! Except Hellboy rejected his role of bringer of the apocalypse when he tore off the horns on his head and fought the armies of hell himself! His right hand of doom, a massive unbreakable stone fist, makes him a formidable opponent in a fight and his knowledge of the occult means he is nearly always at an advantage when facing off against supernatural forces. He's joined by an aquatic-man called Abe Sapien, a ghost psychic called Johann Kraus, and a "firestarter", Liz Sherman. The cast has also included golems, vampires, witches, demons, and assorted supernatural beings like giant frog monsters. Hellboy is currently in Hell, trying to figure out a way back, while chaos erupts in the BPRD series, Hell on Earth. When he's not fighting crime, Hellboy enjoys cigars, beer, junk food and petting his many cats. He's also got an on/off relationship with Liz and has a great sense of humour. He's also one of the few superhero comics characters to have only had great movies made from their source material. Guillermo del Toro's two Hellboy movies have both been excellent in large part thanks to Ron Perlman's performance who was perfectly cast as Hellboy. He's got the character, the look, hell, everything about him puts him in good standing amongst the superhero greats like Batman (whom he's also starred alongside in a comic). Hellboy's simply the best! * Those are my picks for the best non-Marvel/DC superheroes. Who're your favourites? Let us know in the comments below!
