10 Best Single Issue Comics Ever
1. Sandman #13
Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg's Sandman is one of the most important comics of the twentieth century - one that managed to find an audience that didn't solely consist of hardcore comic book fans.
That alone should intimate the book's significance, but of course its quality had something to do with it as well. Gaiman, situating the comic in the horror genre, was right at home, and nowhere is this illustrated better than in the comic's thirteenth issue, titled "Men of Good Fortune".
Focussing on Dream and Death - the series' two principle leads - in a story that starts all the way back in 1389, the fourth part to the Doll's House arc works both as a conclusion and as a standalone story. It's truly epic, following the story of a mortal who is given the power of immortality by Dream, so long as they reconvene once every century.
And with that established, Gaiman sets out to tell a tale of loss, age, loneliness and companionship. The ending is even more spectacular, and one that no one should ever dream of spoiling for those yet to read it for themselves.
