6. Sensational Spider-Man Annual Vol. 2 - To Have And To Hold
To Have and To Hold is a story every Spider-Man fan has to read, and one that arrived at a particularly testing time during the fallout surrounding One More Day, where Spidey's marriage to Mary Jane was stricken from continuity, as well as a number of other elements Marvel editorial had taken issue with.
One More Day was shocking, controversial, and blatantly unnecessary. To its credit, however, it did inspire Matt Fraction's barnstorming love letter to Peter Parker and MJ's marriage in Sensational Spider-Man's second annual, titled "To Have and To Hold".
The fact this issue even exists is an achievement in and of itself, as it pretty much contradicted Marvel's 'no-marriage' policy at the time. Fraction goes so far in celebrating Peter and MJ's relationship that he actually depicts several pivotal moments in the pair's love life, with an encounter at a frozen New York airport even echoing the Bronze Age beats that built their marriage to begin with.
It's simply wonderful, and a brilliant reply to one of the most baffling editorial obsessions to have ever found its way through the medium, whether at Marvel, or at DC.
