10 Best Single Issue Comics Ever
3. Daredevil #191 - Roulette
There are so many seminal Daredevil stories out there, and though Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's Born Again is undoubtedly the best, it took place over the course of six issues. Roulette, on the other hand, was just the subject of Daredevil #191 - one of the finest superhero stories ever put to print.
Bookending Miller's seminal run on the Man Without Fear, Roulette sees Matt Murdock pay a visit to one of his most famous adversaries, Bullseye, who's recovering from a recent fight with Matt on a hospital bed. The character had debuted as something of a joke villain but, over the course of Miller's run, the assassin transformed into a truly sinister antagonist, having murdered Elektra midway through Miller's stint on the book.
As you've probably guessed already, her death deeply affected Hell's Kitchen's hero, and when the chance came to take his revenge, Murdock grasped it with both hands. The ensuing drama is anything but gratifying however, as Miller takes the opportunity to illustrate that the character is - ostensibly - on the edge, engaging in a game of Russian Roulette with the man who shattered his life months earlier.
Bullseye - paralysed and unable to speak - is forced to listen as Daredevil ruminates on his time as the Kitchen's vigilante. The ending is devastating and character-defining in equal respects, and one that shouldn't be spoiled for the reader yet to come across it.
