10 Best Superhero Bromances

5. Batman & Superman

The two original superheroes, Superman and Batman have basically defined the major archetypes of superheroes in modern comics. For Superman, you have someone of incredible power with a background heavily steeped in science fiction. Batman comes from the world of mystery and crime fiction, being a non-powered man who takes it upon himself to do something about the crime festering in his city. The two characters are as different as day and night, and their relationship has gone through a number of incarnations. In the Golden Age, both were depicted as good friends, during a time when Batman was lightened up. It was a depiction that largely held until Frank Miller completely reversed it in the 80s with The Dark Knight Returns. Now, Superman was depicted as little more than a tool of the government, while Batman was an extreme answer to corruption and crime, and their relationship became more antagonistic. The 90s and early 2000s saw the relationship soften a bit. Though the two had different stances on many aspects of their work, they also held a deep mutual respect for each other. Despite their myriad differences, there is probably no one else in the universe the other would trust more to have watching their back. The two will meet on the big screen for the first time up the upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice film. Director Zack Snyder has said The Dark Knight Returns will be a heavy influence, which unfortunately means we may get more of the antagonistic relationship.
