10 Biggest Comics Controversies Of 2017

You might think this is a huge controversy - and maybe it should be - but it just didn't blow up as big as some other events this year, even though it maybe should have.

It's plain that Doomsday Clock was one of the most talked about comic projects of the whole year, and for the most part that discussion has been positive. Even those concerned at the notion of a sequel to the classic Watchmen comic ultimately circled around the discussion of whether Watchmen 'needs' a sequel.

However, one element of the comic's publication is particularly troubling: the fact that it is yet another example of DC using the Watchmen concept and characters against the original creators wishes.

Without going into great detail, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' work on Watchmen was originally agreed to on a contract that would revert the rights to the characters back to the creators around a year after the last printing of the title. The problem, however, is that DC has never ended printing of Watchmen.

Moore has always been against the continued use, and while Gibbons has been more open in the past, he only found out about Doomsday Clock plans at NYCC, from a comics news site.

In the end, Doomsday Clock does also stand as an example of the creators rights or wishes being ignored, and it is a dark shadow on what could be a huge project.
