4. Captain Ultra
Marvel ComicsStop us if you've heard this one before but, well, you probably haven't. Captain Ultra's gimmick, besides his powers and costume, were that he was a stand up comedian-turned-superhero. Giffin Gogol was part of both the Defenders and Wonder Man's ill-fated Revengers, who discovered his powers whilst under hypnosis conducted on him by space aliens. He was completely invulnerable, except when he got near a naked flame. Then he would immediately faint, as seen above. So Captain Ultra was something of a one-note joke, sure. That hasn't stopped Squirrel Girl from having a long, storied career where she once managed to take down Doctor Doom single handedly, and pops up in every big crossover event in some capacity. He eventually got over his fear of fire with the help of Doc Samson, but that wasn't enough for Captain Ultra to be taken seriously as a superhero. Along with his invulnerability Gogol was also blessed with flight, x-ray vision, ultra-strength and endurance, durability, reflexes and the psionic ability to become intangible at will. Despite all this and the stand-up comic thing - which was criminally underused, can you imagine a Seinfeld-style series where the hero moonlights as a masked vigilante? - he's only ever turned up once since his early appearances, leading an Avengers team in Nebraska after Civil War. We have some heckles ready and waiting, Marvel.
