10 Comic Book Characters Every Reader Wants To Be
10. Death Of The Endless The older sister of Dream of the Endless, the eponymous Sandman of the title, Death was introduced fairly early on and promptly floored pretty much everyone, becoming possibly the most popular character in the series. Along with her six brothers and sisters, Death represents the anthropomorphic personification of a primal force in the universe in this case, death itself and is one of the most powerful beings there is. But thats not the appeal of the character. By turns wise, flippant, solemn and frivolous, Death is the perfect no-nonsense but caring older sibling for the angst-ridden, highly-strung Dream. Shes the person everyone really wants to meet when they finally kick the bucket: someone warm, calm and sweet, wholl take their hand as she leads them away. Shes nonchalant and down-to-earth, but also the essence of compassion and understanding, always able to say the right thing to the right person at the right time. When she first appears, Dream has finally regained his full power and his kingdom after seven decades of captivity and is sitting in the square feeding the pigeons and sulking, because he has no idea what to do next. So she takes him to work with her, and illustrates to him the importance of their role in the world, refreshing and restoring his spirit. Thats what she does for everyone. Death looks after people, completely unflappably, yet never taking herself too seriously. Created at the tail end of the post-goth 1980s, a wave of female Sandman readers suddenly found themselves wearing ankhs around their necks and backcombing their hair again, and shes still coming near the top of lists of the sexiest women in comics, over two decades later.
