10 Comic Book Covers That Totally Lied To You

4. Fantastic Four Vs. The X-Men #3

Daredevil #179
Marvel Comics

Continuing the trend of misleading covers, Fantastic Four vs. The X-Men #3 takes a scene and throws it on the cover in what amounts to an absolute lie. The preceding books established that the X-Men had to turn to Doctor Doom for help in stabilizing Kitty Pryde, whose intangibility had gone a bit wonky.

They weren't happy dealing with Doom, but they had no choice after Reed Richards sent them away. The two teams did fight one another, but not in this issue. That happened in the previous book, so already, this cover isn't showing what happens in the comic.

The cover features several members of the X-Men wearing Doctor Doom masks while Doom stands in the center, watching with a satisfied look on his face. The Thing is dead, as are Johnny Storm, Reed Richards, and Susan Storm, and only Franklin Richards is alive, though he is fleeing from Havoc.

No fight took place within the pages of this book, and at no point did the X-Men wear Doom masks to kill the FF and terrorize Franklin. The imagery is somewhat tied to a series of dreams Franklin had in the first book, but it's a stretch, given the fight shown on this cover.
