James David Hudnall passed away in April at the age of 61, following complications from diabetes. He died one day before his 62nd birthday. Hudnall began working in the industry with his breakout series ESPers, published by Eclipse Comics in 1986, but he would go on to work for both DC, Marvel, and many more publishers.

Before beginning his career in the arts, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served in England. After his tenure in the military, he went to Coleman College in San Diego, where he majored in computer science. His return to the United States brought him back into the world of comics, which sparked his interest in writing.

He first started at Eclipse Comics as a marketing director, but that was only the beginning of a long career in comics. He eventually went on to work for Marvel Comics, Image, Dark Horse, and Malibu.

In 2013, Hudnall published his first novel, The Age of Heroes: Hell's Reward, though he is best known in the industry for his graphic novel, Sinking, which earned him a coveted Eisner Award nomination. In 2017, he was recognized for his lifetime of work with the Inkpot Award at San Diego Comic-Con International.
