This is it, the great granddaddy of them all. Crisis on Infinite Earths changed comic book storytelling forever. Not only did it do away with DCs, (at the time) 40+ years of established continuity, it did so in a way that made sense, was exciting to read and, at the same time, breathed new life in to the entire DCU. This original Crisis has it all, tragic deaths (Supergirl), noble sacrifices (The Flash), monstrous villains (The Anti-Monitor) and surprises galore. It even features at least one appearance by every major character DC had published up until that point. Creators Marv Wolfman and George Perez wielded the impossible with such audaciousness and chutzpah, that fans were left awestruck by the enormity of it all. In the fiery wake of the first Crisis, the wreckage of the old DCU was quickly re-built by creators like Frank Miller (who re-envisioned Batmans origins) and John Byrne (who completely re-appropriated Superman for a new era). Meanwhile, Mike Baron scripted Wally Wests early days as the new Flash and Steve Engelhart re-introduced Hal Jordan as Green Lantern. In fact, pretty much every character received a makeover (or at least a much-needed tweaking) in some way or another. No event has ever had the impact of Crisis on Infinite Earths and, in all honesty, its unlikely that one ever will again...
