2. Wonder Woman

DC Comics

Wonder Woman’s origin began with her mother Hippolyta, Queen of the immortal Amazons, so desperately wanting a child that she molded one out of clay and prayed to her gods to give it life. Princess Diana grew up on Paradise Island until the day Steve Trevor crashed on the island. She won the right to return him to “Man’s World” as Wonder Woman. Later, Diana is the biological daughter of Hippolyta and Zeus, King of the Greek Gods.

The Golden Age of Wonder Woman was intrinsically attached to World War II. This version joined the Justice Society as their secretary. This had been retconned to be a time-traveling Queen Hippolyta. The Silver Age one was a founding member of the Justice League, but when Crisis on Infinite Earths wiped her out of existence, her place was taken by Black Canary. A new Diana was introduced into the Post-Crisis world.

In the modern incarnation of Wonder Woman, she is a nigh-invulnerable, incredibly powerful demigoddess who did first appear in the 1940s but stopped when Congress came after the superheroes to unmask or retire. Diana’s most recent return to Man’s World was when Darkseid unleashed Parademons on the Earth and brought together the current version of the Justice League.
