Only five partially-merged Earths remained - Earth-1, Earth-2, Earth-4, Earth-S, and Earth-X - and the assembled heroes of the remaining Earths were ready to take the fight to the main architect of this cosmic disaster, the Anti-Monitor. A team of the strongest heroes from the five Earths descended on an asteroid to directly confront the Anti-Monitor in the soon-to-be-classic issue #7 of Crisis on Infinite Earths.

While most of the heroes were fighting monsters that were materializing from the very walls of the Anti-Monitor's fortress, the Kimiyo Hoshi version of Doctor Light went ahead and discovered the solar collector that the all-powerful rogue was using to speed up the merging of the five Earths. Superman caught up to Kimiyo and moved to destroy the machine as the Anti-Monitor struck him. The Man of Steel's scream of pain reached the super hearing of Supergirl and she sped to her cousin's side. The villain continued to beat the near helpless Last Son of Krypton until Kara crashed into him with all of her might.

They traded blow after blow, with the Anti-Monitor vowing that he would kill them. Supergirl had destroyed the Anti-Monitor’s armor and his power was waning. Kara flew them both into his machine, destroying it. Doctor Light, who had been in awe of Supergirl’s courage and was ashamed of her own inaction, called out to offer help. When the Maid of Might turned away, the Anti-Monitor blasted a tremulous final dose of energy through her.

Supergirl lived long enough to tell Kal she loved him and died in his arms.
