10 Comic Book Supervillains Who Created Their Own Worst Enemy

5. Knull And The Symbiotes

Knull Venom
Marvel Comics

Sometimes the consequences of a villain's actions are observed pretty quickly, as with the aforementioned rivalry between Ultimate Peter Parker and Norman Osborn. Other times the full ramifications take a bit longer to manifest - like with Joe Chill killing Bruce Wayne's parents.

And then there's Knull, an eldritch being of pure darkness who had to wait billions of years to receive his just desserts after one of his symbiote creations finally stood up against him - Venom.

This entry is a bit of a double whammy when you think about it, as there'd be no Venom without Spider-Man, and no Venom without Knull. So you have a villain who created a villain, who was then a hero, and then a villain again, and then a sort of anti-hero, and then a villain, and then finally a hero. (You're liable to get a headache the longer you think about it.)

Either way, long story short, Knull is a being who existed before the Big Bang. As the god of darkness, he was naturally opposed to the light and took particular grievance with the celestials who began exploring the cosmos. As a result, he forged the first ever symbiote - All-Black, a sword comprised of pure darkness that Knull used to decapitate one of the intruders.

But time would pass, and after encountering Thor and learning how ignoble their master was, the symbiotes created by Knull rebelled, entrapping the god on a planet and adopting the name Klyntar.

One such symbiote, Venom, would embark on its own redemptive journey after being abandoned by Spider-Man and then corrupted by Eddie Brock. After adopting a number of hosts, Venom returned to Eddie and the two fought Knull together, using Mjolnir and the Silver Surfer's cosmic board to kill him once and for all.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
