You don't have to be a die hard comic book fan to know that death - for superheroes and their villains - is a fairly irrelevant concept to speak of.

Over the last eighty or so years, the medium has played home to dozens of resurrections, reboots and returns. So much so that death itself is, for the most part, considered to be but a step in the journey every comic book character has to make. Not all have been so lucky however, and, when you consider how villainous returns outweigh heroic ones at a scale of 10/1, being a bad guy and somehow not coming back has to hurt.

And not all of those who've been unfortunate enough not to return from death's steely embrace are unpopular either; some of the finest characters in Batman's rogues gallery have been dead for the better part of twenty-five years, unbeknownst to comic fans who, while intrigued by the medium, have rarely ventured into it head first, preferring instead to set up shop in Batman: The Animated Series which, when you think about it, isn't all that bad an attitude to have.

But who are those villains who've been most screwed over by the resurrection lottery? The ones who look upon Joker with envied eyes? From DC, Marvel and beyond, here are the villains that never quite made it passed that elusive final barrier, for better, or for worse.
