On September 11, 2001, members of Al Queda hijacked plane flights and caused the planes to crash into both towers of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and, due to passenger intervention, a field in Pennsylvania. The attacks killed thousands and shock the world to its core. Because most of the mainstream comic creator offices were still based in New York City at the time, and a number of creators lived there, it was impossible for them to not be directly affected by the tragedy.

Seeing the firefighters, police, rescue workers and everyday people step up to not only run into the burning buildings to try to help people, but to dig people out for weeks after their collapse, redefined the word hero in the eyes of many people. That statement includes the people that create the stories involving the superheroes and villains readers enjoyed every month.

Nearly every major company, and a few of the smaller ones, created comics commemorating the tragedy, with the proceeds going to various relief funds that had been created since 9/11. Some of these stories followed their company's heroes and their reactions to what happened that morning, while others were highly personal stories of average people and what the loss meant to them.
